The word hypnosis comes from the Greek word “hypnos” meaning sleep. Essentially hypnosis is the same state of mind as that of the REM stage of sleep, when the mind processes the day’s information and reprogrammes itself.
During the course of the day we all go in and out of these trance states, where our mind is so focussed on a subject that we are unaware of what is going on around us. Watching television is an example and much utilised by advertising companies who are hoping to lock into this highly suggestible state!
Our conscious mind is able to rationalise and may know all the reasons why we need to change a behaviour; however, this can be hindered by input from the instinctive, unconscious mind which pattern matches to previous experiences thoughts or fears.
Hypnosis is so effective because this is the state when our unconscious mind is open to suggestion. We are thus able to reprogramme any unhelpful beliefs whilst creating a calm anchor allowing the conscious mind to move forward.
